Clifton Arizona. Clifton is the location of one of the world's largest deposits of copper. Unfortunately the nearby town of Old Morenci has been completely swallowed by the open pit mine - another sad loss of our mining heritage. Clifton - while once a booming frontier mining town - is in serious decline.

When people were convicted of crimes there or in the neighboring town of Morenci, they weren’t Two mining companies were organized in the Clifton-Morenci District in the early 1870's; the Longfellow Copper Company (which later became the Arizona Copper Company) and the Detroit Copper Company (later became Phelps Dodge, Morenci Branch). The Cliff Mine is the first successful mine in the Michigan Copper District and dates from 1845. It remained highly successful, the largest copper mine in the US for more than a decade.

Outer town of Clifton is populated, although dwindling due to slow down in mine operations. Exploration, Development, and Production - Clifton Mining Company has received the report that for January 2021, Desert Hawk Gold Corp. (Desert Hawk) sold 286 ounces of gold and 302 ounces of silver recovered from the leach pad. They crushed 19,797 tons of ore and added 234 ounces of gold to the leach pad. There are currently 5,080 ounces of recoverable gold on the leach pad.

Today the site of Cliftonville is a lush, green valley given completely back to nature. Thick with underbrush, the place bears little evidence of its early history. The pit mouth was covered over by strip-mining operations in the mid 1960.
