Intraoperativ undersökning utförs vanligtvis på maximalt 4 sentinel nodes. Mastektomi Hela bröstet opereras bort men axillen sparas. Sentinel node mapping and biopsy is a technique that may be performed in conjunction with breast cancer surgery, such as a mastectomy, in order to assess the lymph nodes in the underarm area (axillary lymph nodes) for evidence of cancer. The surgeon who performed your mastectomy would be the person with whom you would discuss the axillary dissection. This is different from a sentinel node biopsy which is performed with lumpectomy. The sentinel nodes are the first few lymph nodes into which a tumor drains. Sentinel node biopsy involves injecting a tracer material that helps the surgeon locate the sentinel nodes during surgery.
